Undergraduates: Electives

Students in the B.Eng. (Civil stream) are allowed to undertake a total of 50 points of non-engineering elective subjects throughout the entire degree.

Students in the B.Eng. (Environmental stream) are allowed to undertake three elective subjects throughout the entire degree.

Students in combined degrees (Civil stream) are allowed to undertake one 12.5 pt elective subject in their final year (or two 6.25 pt subjects). The subject/s must come from this department and be of a fourth year level (i.e. 421-4xx).

Students in combined degrees (Environmental stream) do not have any elective subjects to do.

If you have already undertaken this quota the following subjects ARE NOT pre-approved and you will need to seek advice from the Course Advisor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department.

 

 

First Year

For students who commenced Engineering in 2007 but have not completed 1st year subjects, please see a course advisor.

For students commencing in 2008, please see the appropriate hub for your degree.

 

Second Year

The following electives have been identified as appropriate elective subjects for second year (200 level) engineering:

  1. Any first or second year Science subject
  2. Any first or second year Architecture, Building and Planning subject
  3. Any first or second year language subject may be undertaken.

Please ensure you check the handbook for any prerequisites or requirements before enrolling in any elective subject.

Students should also seek course advice before enrolling in subjects with overlapping course content with engineering subjects.

 

Third Year

The following electives have been identified as appropriate elective subjects for third year (300 level) engineering:

  1. Any second or third year Science subject
  2. Any second or third year Architecture, Building and Planning subject
  3. Any second or third year language subject may be undertaken.

Please ensure you check the handbook for any prerequisites or requirements before enrolling in any elective subject.

Students should also seek course advice before enrolling in subjects with overlapping course content with engineering subjects.

 

Fourth Year

The following electives have been identified as appropriate elective subjects for fourth year engineering:

1st Semester

  • 421489 Hydraulics Applications
  • 421496 High Rise Structures
  • 421523 Occupational Health and Safety Basics
  • 421490 Quantification of Physical Processes A*
  • 421491 Quantification of Physical Processes B*

*Civil Engineering students need to have completed subject 421316 to be eligible to enroll in subjects 421490 and 421491

2nd Semester

  • 421439 Geotechnical Applications
  • 421448 Transport Systems
  • 421477 Research Project
  • 421495 Structural Design

Students with an average of great than 70% when commencing their final year of Engineering study may choose one subject at the fifth (4215xx) or sixth (4216xx) year level.

Up to one subject from outside the Department may be requested. Students need to put in a written application with an argument as to why the subject is complementary to their degree.
