                    Topographic Effects in Stratified Flows

Corrections to this edition include the separate list of corrections to the 1998 paperback addition, plus the following, which have been made in that edition.

I like to think that most of these corrections are either trivial or obvious, but this is not the case for all.  Please contact me if you identify any others.

 

page 1, line 2: replace “supercede” with “supersede”.

 

page 4, line 3: after “viscosity” insert “assumed spatially uniform”.

 

page 5, equations (1.1.12), (1.1.13): “r” should be replaced by “p” (as in equation

             (1.1.1)). There are two instances in each equation.

 

page 8, equation (1.1.22): “” should be replaced by “”.

 

page 12, line –5: (1.3.8) should be replaced by “(1.3.9)”.

 

page 30, Figure 2.5a: delete the isolated vertical arrow in the upper right.

 

page 90, equation (2.7.26): change sign of second term on rhs from “-” to “+”.

              equation (2.7.27): change sign of first term on rhs from “-” to “+”.

 

page 101, 2nd paragraph, line 1: after “gravity current”, insert “head”.

 

page 102, Figure 3.3b: an “O” should be added to the diagram marking the stagnation

             point on the nose of the gravity current.

             line –3: replace “(2.4.31)” with “(2.4.33)”.

 

page 108, line –4: Insert a dagger on the word “layer” relating to a new footnote at the

              bottom of the page, that states “Klemp, Rotunno & Skamarock (J. Fluid Mech. (1997)

                 331, 81) have recently shown that under certain conditions (Boussinesq, small ru, weak

                 upstream shear) this assumption and the ‘bogus’ curve are in fact more appropriate.”.

                 Figure 6.10 caption: After “linear theory” insert “(right panels)”.  After

                         “…flow.” Insert “The mean wind direction is from left to right, and

                          the h contours are in units of  hm, p¢ in units of r0Nuhm.”

 

page 380:  (i) add a footnote, with a ‘dagger’ at the end of the line preceding equation

                         (6.4.2), which states: “For (6.4.2) to be exact, the last term should be multiplied

                               by the bracketed term of (6.4.4).  Here we make the approximation that the vertical

                               acceleration is much less than g, which is a weaker assumption in (6.4.2) than in

                               equation “(6.4.4).”

                 (ii) equation (6.4.6) should be replaced by

                  (iii) in the line following equation (6.4.6): replace “..of vorticity…” with

page 382, first line of section 6.4.2: replace “three-dimensioal” with “three
